28 Days of Risk

Day 1 Find a door or window that looks outside. Stand in front of it looking outside for five or ten minutes several times during the day. You are just looking, observing the world as it goes by your home. All you are doing is observing, there is no threat, there is no risk in looking.

Day 2 Open that door or window. Stand in front of it looking outside for five or ten minutes several times during the day. Today look around through the window, listen to the sounds in your neighbourhood. All you are doing is observing, there is no threat, there is no risk in looking and listening

Day 3 Today you are going to face your first risk. Go outside, sit on your front porch or step. Again do this several times during the day. Now just sit and listen, look, smell the world outside from the safety of your front step. Sitting out in your back yard doesn't count. The risk involved in minimal because like the first day today is just about observation. Stepping out of your nest and into a window seat on the world.

Day 4 Go outside, sit on your front porch or step. Again do this several times during the day. Today we are going to begin interacting with the world outside our front door. Each time a person walks by your step give them a smile, thats all just a friendly "I see you" smile. If they smile back give yourself a mental pat on the back for brightening up someone else's day a little and if they don't give yourself a mental hug for trying.

You will notice I stress mental rewards, this is because a lot of the fear and anxiety dwells in our mind and in order to make each step a little easier we need to persuade our mind that what we are doing is a good thing for us to do.

Day 5 Go outside, sit on your front porch or step. Again do this several times during the day. Each time a person walks by your step give them a smile, that's all just a friendly "I see you" smile. If they smile back give yourself a pat on the back for brightening up someone else's day a little and if they don't give yourself a mental hug for trying. Each time you go out make it a point to say Good Morning or Good Afternoon with a smile to at least one person. Don't worry if they answer back. Each time you do give yourself a mental hug and if they say Hi! back give yourself a mental High Five.

Day 6 Go outside, sit on your front porch or step. Again do this several times during the day. Each time a person walks by your step give them a smile, that's all just a friendly "I see you" smile. If they smile back give yourself a pat on the back for brightening up someone else's day a little and if they don't give yourself a mental hug for trying. Each time you go out make it a point to say Good Morning or Good Afternoon with a smile to at least two person. Don't worry if they answer back. Each time you do give yourself a mental hug and if they say Hi! back give yourself a mental High Five.

Day 7 Go outside, sit on your front porch or step. Again do this several times during the day. Each time a person walks by your step give them a smile, that's all just a friendly "I see you" smile. If they smile back give yourself a mental pat on the back for brightening up someone else's day a little and if they don't give yourself a mental hug for trying. Each time you go out make it a point to say Good Morning or Good Afternoon with a smile to at least three people. Don't worry if they answer back. Each time you do give yourself a mental hug and if they say Hi! back give yourself a mental High Five.

Today is assessment day. Once a week, sit down and think about the week that has gone by. Make notes as to what you found easy and what you found hard. I want you to think about how you are feeling, do you think you are ready for the next step? The next step  means leaving the safety of your front step and actually stepping even further from your nest. If you do not feel ready that's OK, just keep repeating Day Seven until you think you are ready. Once you are sure move on to Day Eight.

Day 8 Today step off our front step and walk to the nearest intersection and back. Along the way share a smile and a greeting with the people you meet. Each time give yourself a mental hug for trying and if you get an answering smile or greeting give yourself a mental Rah Rah Rah, Go Me!

Day 15 Is there a park or playground near your home? If there isn't find out where the nearest park or playground is. Walk to it if you can, if not take the bus or drive to it. Over the next week go there at different times of the day. Observe the people that are there at the same time you are. Are there any you find interesting? Smile and greet these people just observe the rest. If you find someone who seems to respond well to you try a little small talk. This is the biggest risk I've asked you to take so far and I know it can be really scary. If you don't feel able to do it then just let yourself be there. Notice that you are there and safe. Congratulate yourself for making it out of your nest and into a public place. Allow yourself the pride you have earned in getting this far.

Do answer greetings and share smiles but beyond that just sit back and observe the group, how they interact, what they do etc. This meeting is your ultimate test so be sure to choose something that is of great interest to you so that it doesn't feel like a chore.

Today is assessment day. I want you to think about how you are feeling. Do you feel less threatened by the world outside your nest? You should be feeling very proud of what you have accomplished and perhaps a little less fearful. In some small way I hope this has helped you.

Now I need your help. Were you able to complete the whole program? What if anything would you change? Was the pace too fast, too slow, just right? Please leave me a comment, I want this to be a useful tool and it can only be made that way if you share your thoughts and feelings on it.
